Dear Beloved Daughter,

I've been struggling to find words to write a loving letter to you. I can't seem to reach in deep enough to discover the ones that fit. Your second birthday is tomorrow, and I feel like I have been poured out with no more syllables, phrases, or verse. I have only these.

I love you.

I miss you.

I'm sorry you aren't with me.

Love,

Your mother.

  8. I am thinking of you and sharing tears today. I am sorry she isn't with you. I hope you don't mind, but I had a few thoughts for your baby girl.

    Dear Caitlin,
Although I did not have the blessing of knowing you, I have been given the gift of finding your mother. I'm sure you must already know this, but your mother is a wonder. She often takes my breath away with her words. I have never met her "in real life", but I've quickly learned that isn't even necessary. Your mother makes me want to be a better person, she has changed my life. I have found her to be one of the most courageous people I've ever known...truly. She amazes me with her compassion, insight, and lack of bitterness. You must be so very proud. I am thinking of your mom today, and sending her so much love.
p.s. If there is some way, if by some miracle you happen upon my baby girl, could you give her a hug from me? Thank you Caitlin, thank you.

  10. I am hearing all the words in between those lines. Our hands can write and our mouths can speak, but the central places of loss in our bodies--the heart and belly and arms--they speak their own language of quiet in between.
